What is a Marae?
A marae (in New Zealand Maori, Cook Islands Maori, Tahitian) malae (in Tongan) malae (in Samoan and Hawaiian), is a sacred place which served both religious and social purposes in pre-christian Polynesian societies.
For all these communities the Marae represents the capacity to express important cultural traditions, values and most importantly to provide a Sense of Place for our people.
MaraeMelbourne seeks to develop the FIRST nationally operated Marae outside of New Zealand. Melbourne will be the first in the world to operate at a national level outside of its homeland.
To host a Marae in Melbourne signifies the success of Melbourne as a truly multicultural community. The values (tikanga) of Marae are to embrace, include and welcome ALL who visit, stay or share the experience of Marae.
