Our Organisation

In 2003 the South Pacific Foundation (SPF) formed to look at the possibility of developing a complex in Melbourne for the “People of the Pacific”.

In 2004 SPF receives a $50,000.00 Victorian State Government Research Grant to undergo an intensive five year research program identifying the needs of the “People of the Pacific”.

In 2008, the grant was successfully acquitted in the report detailed as “Pasika Victoria – The Way Forward”

In 2009, South Pacific Foundation met for the final time to facilitate a mandated directional amendment arising from the extensive research.  It is clearly agreed and documented within the report that the Pacific Island nations were content to continue sustaining their spiritual and cultural needs within the structure of their churches.  However, it was a much different result for Maori. The need for Maori in Melbourne to sustain culturally, required a space capable of upholding the treasures entrusted to us by our ancestors. Through a unanimous vote, the represented Pacific Nations displayed formal agreement that the body of work in which the South Pacific Foundation was responsible for, had been successfully completed. Maori were given the blessing to unite with an independent kaupapa. The SPF was placed into permanent recess in September 2009.

MaraeMelbourne was officially and legally incorporated in October 2010.
